Being good at troubleshooting is about asking questions and zeroing in on what <em>exactly<\/em> isn&#8217;t working. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever investigating something that isn&#8217;t working, get in the habit of asking yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Where<\/strong> <em>exactly<\/em> is the issue? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What<\/strong> <em>specifically<\/em> isn&#8217;t working?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the case of troubleshooting Local, some questions to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is the Local App itself broken?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is there a problem with just one WordPress site, or all sites in Local?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the issue Connect related, and the issue is with the remote site?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"issues-local-app\" class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" id=\"issues-with-the-local-app\" style=\"color:#000000\"><strong>Issues with the Local App<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Common problems with the Local app include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Error messages within the Local window<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buttons within the Local window that do nothing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many of these issues, the best place to start investigating is the Local log. This log is where Local records events of the various things that it encounters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The easiest way to find the Local Log is by clicking &#8220;Reveal Local&#8217;s Log&#8221; from the &#8220;Help&#8221; menu. Does this new site have the same issue as other sites?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re able to create and work with a new WordPress site, this tells you that Local appears to be working and it&#8217;s possible that the site with problems has become corrupted somehow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the problem affects all sites, inspecting the Local log is a good first step. For example, the Local Router would direct a request for <code>example.local<\/code> to the specific port that WordPress is listening on: <code>localhost:10005<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Local&#8217;s Router is causing issues, then one option is to try disabling the Local Router by setting &#8220;Router Mode&#8221; to <code>localhost<\/code>. More details about restoring a site from just the files can be found in this<strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/localwp.com\/help-docs\/getting-started\/how-to-import-a-wordpress-site-into-local\/#restore-local-site-from-site-files\" data-type=\"help\">help doc.<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If restoring a site to a new one in Local doesn&#8217;t work, then remember to keep asking yourself the troubleshooting questions from the beginning of this help doc: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Where is the issue? What isn&#8217;t working?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the case of a single WordPress site, here are some things to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" id=\"is-site-broken\" style=\"color:#000000\"><strong>Is the site actually broken?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing to note is that because Local is a development environment, there are settings in place that make errors seem more &#8220;noisy.&#8221; A site that seems to work on the remote environment might be showing what seem to be errors, but actually are just warnings. More information about this can be found in this <a href=\"https:\/\/localwp.com\/help-docs\/troubleshooting\/warnings-and-errors-in-local\/\" data-type=\"help\" data-id=\"316\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">help doc.<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" id=\"log-into-wp-admin\" style=\"color:#000000\"><strong>Try logging into the WordPress admin<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Logging into the WordPress admin is a good way to see if the issue affects the whole site, or just the front-end. By default, logging into the WordPress admin is done by adding <code>wp-admin<\/code> to the end of the domain. For example, your browser should try to navigate to something like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-syntaxhighlighter-code\">http:\/\/example.local\/wp-admin\/<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have issues logging into the admin, or the error still exists within the WordPress admin, there&#8217;s likely something wrong with the entire WordPress installation. A good place to continue to troubleshoot is reviewing the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/support\/article\/debugging-in-wordpress\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Debugging in WordPress<\/span><\/strong><\/a> documentation on WordPress.org.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the above WordPress documentation, common solutions might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Disable all plugins and use the default theme. You can find this folder next to the <code>app<\/code> folder, wherever your sites are stored.
